When I read the handwritten notes of my grandfather Willy some time ago, I was fascinated. I got the insight into a completely unknown world. Born in the Kaiserreich in the province (near Stolp in Pomerania), my grand-father describes his life from birth to 1945. At the end of the war, he and his family had to give up their economic existence, their friends and relatives and their homeland. They could save only a few belongings from the approaching enemy troops. With a lot of luck they could get a place in one of the saving ships.In his last days, at the age of 57, my grandfather had to serve the Nazi regime in the Volkssturm (supporting troops consisting of elderly up to the age of 65) with senseless activities. Whoever deserted was hanged. The fanatics did not let anyone escape.He was lucky and was found unfit due to an injury. With a certificate from the Wehrmacht (German army) doctor, he was allowed to leave on a ship. My other grandfather was not so lucky and ended up in Russian captivity. He never said a word about it to his family.My grandfather Willy came to Copenhagen and wrote about his life there in the camp. Together with photos and many pictures of original documents, I have compiled his notes in this book. Through a description of his further life after 1945, I have completed his life story.What fascinated me most was how my grandfather did not give up after the war, but built up a new existence and was there for others with great com-mitment - just as he was used at home.This book offers a small insight into a life from the empire to the present. It is not a exciting novel based on stories, but reproduces the original records un-changed. There were many heroes and perhaps even more perpetrators in World war II. This book simply describes the life story of a loving and dedicat-ed person who was always caring for his family and his fellow humans - un-pretentious and honest.The story of his escape from the Russian army is told in another book "Survival * Escape * Hope"
