Nathan Goff, Jr. (1843-1920) served in all three branches of government, starting as a Union soldier in 1861 he rose to the rank of Major and participated in over twenty engagements including the second Battle of Bull Run, before being captured and imprisoned in Libby Prison. Exchanged for a confederate officer he was interviewed by President Lincoln regarding the conditions in Southern prisoner of war camps. Goff's career as a public servant continued for the next fifty years during which he served as U.S. Attorney, Secretary of the Navy, member of Congress, and as the Republican gubernatorial candidate in the disputed election of 1888 and twenty years as a federal judge for the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Goff completed his career by serving as U.S. Senator from West Virginia from 1913 to 1919. Nathan's son Guy Goff also served as U.S. Senator from West Virginia from 1925 until 1931 and brief biography of his life as well as that of U.S. Congressman Brazilla Carol Reese is included in the work. Anyone interested in surveying the cultural and political history of West Virginia from the Civil War until the New Deal Era should include this book in their reading list.
