Nottingham. 1817. The body-snatcher John Macreadie has been banished to this northern outpost to find fodder for Ben Crouch's profitable resurrection business. He and his assistant, Jack Pegg, begin digging up the town's dead and shipping them north. It seems Edinburgh's surgeons are as ravenous as London's. James Hammond feels like a foreigner in this small, northern hospital, not least because he believes that dissections are important. The prevailing attitude is that dissections are a violation of the sacred human body. They are nothing more than butchering the dead. Hammond, however, is undeterred. He is determined to improve his surgical skills through dissection and, whenever possible, to discover the cause of death in patients whose illnesses were a mystery. His attitude makes him appear rather ruthless. While Hammond has gained a measure of respect among his fellow surgeons and some patients, his superior, Augustus Killmaster, has begun to resent his assistant's looks, his training, and his confidence. Killmaster and his friend, Walter Ewebank, plot to be rid of the young southern upstart. When Killmaster nicks himself during a dissection, Hammond briefly becomes notorious. He never imagined that his drive to understand human anatomy through dissection would spark such shocking repercussions.
