Sammy O'Banion has spent his entire life doing what he loves most. You'd think it were singing...but it is really sharing love. Sammy spent years sacrificing, honing his craft, being resourceful, identifying opportunities to share his music and his heart with those interested in hearing and those who share his love for music. Even in the midst of building his musical career, he spent time diligently. Working, interacting and meeting people who he would support and learn from. Sammy has worked with many of the great that there are too many to list exhaustively. Some of them are: Jackie Wilson, Jerry Butler, Ben E. King, The 4 Tops, The Impressions (with and without Curtis Mayfield), Sam Gooden, Chuck Jackson and he was good friends with Mr. Brown (James Brown) to name a few. Just a few years ago, his mutual friend Fred Shaw introduced him to Fantasia. She told him he heard her sing, when would she get to hear him sing. Of course, he honored her request and sang for her. He ended up singing a few songs for her and her wedding party at Queens Landing and they performed several duets together at her wedding reception. Sammy and Fantasia closed the party down with their version of 'I'll Take You There' by The Staple Singers. Sammy has played for two sitting presidents: President Jimmy Carter and President George Bush, Sr., He's sang the National Anthem twice for the Chicago Bears at the requests of Mike Ditka as well as five other times at the old Atlanta Falcons stadium. Sammy's additional accomplishments are equally as fortuitous. He has been inducted in the International Beach Music Hall of Fame, The South Carolina R&B/Beach Music Hall of Fame and the most prestigious Beach Music Hall of Fame. With these acknowledgments and two #1 World Wide Beach Music records, 2006 'What's Goin' On' (remake of Marvin Gaye's record) and 2016 "Don't Walk On By" (authenticated by John Hook - Beach Music historian and author), Sammy has over 25 top ten Beach Music recordings. Sammy O'Banion is the self-proclaimed 'Luckiest Guy on Earth'. He said, "I've stumbled into great opportunities without a lot of smartness of my own. I've learned to ask questions and I've never stopped." Among all the stories he's told and all the wisdom he's shared, my favorite is, "I don't talk a lot about me. I learned a long time ago, 'I' is not much but 'we' is a bunch." As Sammy's ghost writer and publisher, I'm thankful to be a part of that 'we'.
