During the 40 years before the Civil War, a pay system unique to the U.S. Army induced officers to keep slaves wherever they were posted in the country, including in supposedly "free" states and territories. In this groundbreaking book, Walt Bachman reveals how relatively few officers kept slaves at West Point in New York (among them Robert E. Lee, who served as superintendent of the nation's military academy from 1852 to 1855), while a great many officers (many of them West Point graduates) used slaves as their servants in Kansas at Fort Leavenworth, one of the nation's largest army bases. Moving to the post-war era, Bachman also tells the tragic story of Johnson Whittaker, one of the first African-American cadets at West Point, who was brutally assaulted there and then expelled after being falsely convicted of faking the attack. The book concludes with the uplifting tale of Alexander Darnes, the former slave of a West Point officer and professor, who went to medical school after the war and became the second African-American doctor in Florida.,
