Description

Since time immemorial, an ancient American Indian trace has crossed Broad Mountain beginning from the Old Creek Crossing of the Tennessee River near where Kimball, TN now stands and passing close to the present Tracy City, Coalmont, and Beersheba Springs. It then descended the plateau and followed the valley of the Collins to Rock Island and beyond. From 1775 to 1795 it served the break-away Chickamauga tribe as a war path from their "lower towns" on the south side of the Tennessee River to attack the settlements in the Cumberland valley. It seems likely that Beersheba Cain and her three companions rode up this old trace when they discovered the chalybeate spring on August 1, 1833. Southwest of Beersheba, it was developed into a road in the 1840s, was known as Hunter's Mill Road, and is plainly shown on the 1895 Coastal and Geodetic Survey map of Tennessee. It runs right through the Shady Valley Nursery property recently acquired by the State of Tennessee for use in conjunction with the South Cumberland Recreation Area. Southwest of this area, it could be seen on the 1958 topographic map as a single dotted line. It then disappeared altogether from later topographic maps. Could it still be found? And in what condition - easily walkable or grown up in greenbriar and blackberry? There was only one way to find out. Go look. This booklet is the story of four expeditions in the summer 2018 to answer those questions. The picture on the back cover hints at the answer. With some interruptions, it is possible to identify the old trace - or at least the road that later followed it - from the site of the former spring in Beersheba to where the trace crossed Firescauld Creek at the eastern most point where it could do so without bluffs on either side - as shown by the map on the front cover. This is also the location of Hunter's mill that later belonged to Arthur Long. Much of the route would make a beautiful, easy and historic walking trail.
