Description

"Dr. Cross is here publishing a selection from his old sermons; and he has hit upon the idea of attaching to each the date of its production and first preaching, so that, as he says, 'these discourses represent him in the successive stages of his ministry,' which is, he adds, 'the only autobiography he could produce, the only one, doubtless, to be desired.' Each and all of them are worth careful perusal and will be found to edify, though some in a greater degree than others. Sermons which represent a ministry of more than fifty-four years must have another source of interest, too, the psychological." -The Literary Churchman "Dr. Cross may be said to have been a preacher from his earliest years, for he tells us that the first sermon in this volume was 'preached at Pompey Hill, Onondaga Country, N.V., on the sixteenth anniversary of his nativity, July 4, 1829, written afterwards, and often repeated during the fifty years of his ministry.' In a quaint and amusing preface he records how at the bottom of the homiletical barrel he found a few old acquaintances in threadbare and tattered guise, smiling reproachfully out of the dust of an undeserved oblivion. He beckoned them forth, gave them new garments, and bade them go to the printer. And lo! - here they are, twenty-two of them, in comely array, with fresh anointed looks, knocking modestly at the door. The preacher's style is an attractive one, his language vigorous and eloquent, and there is an originality about him which is refreshing and captivating." -The Church Times "This is the sixth volume from the pen of Dr. Cross within a brief period. The title 'Old Wind and New' is given as it contains his earliest and some of his latest discourses. One, on Filial Hope, he preached when sixteen years of age - fifty-five years ago. The latest was produced last year. As a preacher Dr. Cross has many admirers. In the preface he states that he once contemplated an autobiography. He had written a hundred pages, when in an hour of indigestion he committed them to the flames; and as a substitute these discourses represent him in the successive stages of his ministry." -The American Church Review "…the high excellence of this series of sermons." -Southern Pulpit "The discourses are eloquent and evangelical." -The New York Herald "The sermons are elegant in diction, easy yet solid in thought, will be found useful for family reading, and, when wisely appealed to, will prove of no little service to the preacher." -The Church Guardian "These sermons are truly catholic in spirit, of wide range of thought and adaptation, and can be used - as most sermons cannot - by lay readers, to the great edification of any intelligent congregation." -The Living Church CONTENTS.
