Om, a mystical sound of unknown origin, having immense spiritual power, is known since ancient time. It has been described by intellectuals from time to time, but it still defies any explanation. Om became an auspicious word to be put before the start of any sacred work to protect it. In ancient times, it started with a simple curved line to a coiled structure like the trunk of an elephant. This started as a mandala (auspicious sign) representing Ganesha till its present form was developed. The Sanskrit name for Om is Pranava which is verbal pra-nu (to utter the syllable Om). It has been associated with Swastika and Indus Valley Civilization, but now it is considered pre-Vedic Tamil origin. It started as a sound during Rig-Veda, where it was used for a request or command and was an integral part of the sacrifice. Om has been described in Brahmi, Sanskrit, Tamil and Devanagari languages and is mentioned in Jainism and Buddhism. In Hinduism Om represented earlier nirguna (formless) creator Brahman, Parbrahman, Shiva or Vishnu. Its figure (Omkara) emerged in Brahmi, followed by Granth (Tamil), Siddham and Devanagari. In Sanskrit in figure form, it became Om+akara = Omkara or Onkara from the sound Om. This idea was not confined to Indian scripts but spread to the adjoining countries, including the north of Tibet to Korea. Every script in every country designed Omkara in their alphabets and designed the figure of Omkara as per their concept. In Devanagari, the origin of AUM has been traced to A-kar (with the shape), U-kar (without shape) and M-akar (neither with nor without shape), the first word of each when joined together forms AUM, and by their grammar rule A+U=O AUM=Om. Omkara has the concept of waking, dreaming, deep sleep, and the fourth stage Turiya. Om and the figure of Omkar or Onkar are very auspicious for devotees of Shiva (Sadashiv), Vishnu, Ganpati, Shaktism (Srividya, goddesses) and in Yoga, Meditation and Yantra pooja. In Sikhism, Ek Aonkar conveys the idea that a unique (one) creator is everywhere. He has been there since antiquity and will continue till infinity. He has no beginning and no end. He has no enmity with anyone and is indestructible. Whatever we may do, we will never get the truth about him. Everybody is bound by the law of nature.
