"What does it mean to be a glossopoeist? What does it actually mean to create a language and why would we do it? What is it that we are actually doing when we design grammars, refine phonologies and forge lexicons? What is it that we actually do and how can we elevate our craft to something further? These might seem like pointless questions with even more pointless answers. You have every right to say to me, "why can't we just go on with our peculiar hobby in peace without having to turn it into anything serious?" You might well be right, and if so, I should be ignored! However, I sincerely believe, these questions and their answers are indispensable if we are to progress any further with our artistic movement. If we truly wish to optimise our full potential, we must fully understand it and its impact."On Glossopoetics is a collection of essays based around the philosophy and spirituality of language construction - or glossopoeia. It deals with a number of issues from aesthetics, artistic movements, the true nature of language, and even what we should refer to ourselves as. Within the essays, I have attempted to define the significance of what it means to be a glossopoeist, why we do it, and how we might refine the art. I also introduce some my own ideas such as glossopoeic philology and attempting to use languages are allegory. I have tried to tackle these ideas with humour and seriousness, and, of course, a little romanticism.David Tait is a British-born glossopoeist based in Madrid and the creator of various languages, including Hopyratian, Eldich, Fairish among others.
