Description

This is my fourth book and once again the stories are largely based on interviews. Granted there is some research involved and recollections of my own thrown in but the stories are told primarily through their voices. The book includes stories of three Oshkosh aviators recognized nationally for their aerial feats, to a local television station that ended less than a year after being granted a license. There are stories of people and businesses that left their mark on the city's historic landscape, two being of world-wide importance, and three sport stories that seem to be a necessary part of my writings. There is a story of a Sicilian immigrant couple who made dining-out a pleasure, and a story of a business woman trying to make Oshkosh a better place to live. There is a story of a longago doctor who made house calls, and two stories of transplanted residents; one trying to restore part of our city's heritage through his hands-on-work, the other who helped Oshkosh become the Pageant City. There is a much-forgotten story of a wealthy woman who gathered nearly as much newspaper coverage as did the Oshkosh Woodworker's Strike of 1898, and a story of a downtown that once was, and two stories intent on restoring its lost image. Lastly there's a story about our river culture that is slowly being lost and two whose family moorings run deep in the culture of the river who refuse to give it up.
