Description

The dissertation offers a critical analysis and re-interpretation of Karl Barth's theology of culture in order to develop a new framework through which the theologian can explore popular culture critically while respecting its secular self-understanding and its unique contributions to human flourishing. While Barth scholars typically turn to his remarks on "true words" in culture, I argue that this material was not intended as a theology of culture and should therefore be set aside in favor of a model that better corresponds with his analyses of particular cultural forms. Bringing these together with his writings on hermeneutics, eschatology, and the Spirit, I suggest a "pneumatology of culture" (grounded in the concept of encounter-in-unity) that can respect the integrity and autonomy of secular culture even as it allows critical theological assessments of its cultural forms. Putting Barth in conversation with scholars and producers of popular culture, criteria are developed for investigating popular entertainment in terms of its "task" - namely, its contribution to the play, relaxation, and fellowship that characterize human recreation in light of humanity's re-creation by the Spirit. These theological definitions and criteria resonate more deeply with popular entertainment's secular self-understanding, thus producing more methodologically sophisticated and culturally relevant analyses that can account for the complex structures through which these works are produced and distributed.
