Transported to Van Diemen's Land for trying to steal a chicken during the Irish famine, sisters Brigid and Eilis survive the long journey on a convict ship. When they're moved to the Female Factory in Hobart Town, they are reunited with their mother, Ellen, who was transported a year and a half earlier. John Seymour was the provider for his family after his father was killed in a mining accident at the Imperial Slate Mines in Ireland. During a protest strike, John and his brother Michael are falsely accused for assaulting a fellow miner and transported to Van Diemen's Land, forced to leave their mother and young sister to fend for themselves. Torn from their country and forced into a penal system, the sum of their life is written on parchment. They each struggle to maintain a sense of self and identity by using resilience, courage, determination and their Irish spirits, desperately trying to find freedom in their own way. After a rocky start to their relationship, Brigid and John marry and have a family. Eilis embraces all things English, changing her name and religion to marry an Englishman. Michael finds his freedom at the bottom of the bottle. The families move to Wollongong where the tension between the sisters explodes into an inconsolable rift. The tragic death of a child brings them together, but nothing is the same between them. They drift further apart until ties are cut completely after a dramatic shooting incident with a neighbour. Both families end up in Sydney where Brigid and John watch the next generation create their own lives. The cycle of births, deaths, marriages and family drama contains an emotional rollercoaster for the couple who struggled to make a good life for themselves regardless of their convict past. In the end, Brigid sadly loses John, the love of her life, and slides slowly into dementia with her grief. The story started with a new, uncertain life for Brigid as a convict and ends with her death as a free woman who lived courageously, loved fiercely and tragically lost much.
