This exhibition catalog documents the life and work of Paul-Henri Bourguignon (1906-1988), an artist, photographer, art critic, novelist, and playwright. Born in Brussels, Belgium, in 1906, Bourguignon settled in Columbus, Ohio, with his wife, Erika, a member of the Ohio State University faculty, in 1950, and lived there until his death in 1988. The volume accompanies an exhibition at the Columbus Museum of Art and, like the exhibition, features paintings and drawings from throughout Bourguignon's working life. Both trace Bourguignon's development from a young and impressionable student to a confident, passionate artist knowledgeable about a vast array of predecessors and contemporaries yet secure in his own voice. The title celebrates the 50th anniversary of one of Bourguignon's earliest exhibitions in the United States, a solo presentation at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts (now the Columbus Museum of Art) in 1964. Bourguignon's artwork is steeped in the heritage of European modernism and his own studies in art history but also filled with sights remembered from his extensive travels in Europe, North Africa, Haiti, and Peru. His oeuvre encompasses landscapes and figure studies that become increasing expressionist and abstract in later years. The most comprehensive overview of Bourguignon's work to date, the catalog includes a Foreword by Columbus Museum of Art Director Nannette V. Maciejunes and a Curator's Statement by Chief Curator and Curator of European Art Dominique H. Vassar. Essays by art historian Ann Bremner and historian Louis Rose, an illustrated checklist, and a chronology of Bourguignon's life complete the book. Bremner delves into the background of the artist's life and work, placing his art in historical context. Rose investigates the insights into his work offered by his photographs of Haiti.
