PHILMONT, "Journey of a Boy Scout Troop" Be Prepared is a True Story. In Journey of a Boy Scout Troop; Be Prepared Dorsey and Arthur illuminates the odyssey that led twenty-one Boy Scouts and five-adults on a journey to the prestigious well recognized nationally and internationally Boy Scout Camping Facility in the World. This a True Story of their Ordeal to Prepare and Train for their Scouting Experience at Philmont Scout Ranch, their fundraising efforts to cover the cost of the trip and sacrifices made by community leaders, churches, family and businesse involved in assisting these young scouts to reach their Goal; Making it to Philmont. These Boy Scouts were recommended and recruited from all regions of the State of Louisiana by their respective Scoutmasters and Troop Committe Members. They hailed from Small rural Towns, large Cities and Bayou Communities. Life in the Post-Depression South was tough especially with "Jim Crow" Laws telling Blacks what they could and could not do or say. During this period of people between 1960-1970 SEGREGATION of the races was being practiced in Schools, Churches, restraurants, department stores bath room facilities, movies, public swimming pools, hotels, businesses, bus line systems, hospitals and doctors. Things were seperate yet not equal even the Boy Scouts of America had to follow segrated rules for their Camping facilities until President Johnson in 1964 signed into law the abolishment of Segregation nation wide and some complied and others did not. Just as other Civil Right activitist stepped up so did this Black Boy Scout TroopContigent E-815 from Louisiana come together to make Louisiana History, New Mexico History and American History as Pioneers integregating the first all White Boy Scout Camping Facility in the United States in "1966." Our Experience, Preparation, Training and Execution in the Backcountry during our High Adventure Survival and Training Missions was part of our Life's Journey and Destiny. This Journey benefited us through becomming Self-Reliant, Building Character and Integretity, while Perpetuating our Faith and Freedom help molded, shaped, developed and inspired us into becomming young men upon our return to Base Camp after a (9) day Ordeal at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. Understanding the Principles that were used by the early Pioneers; Appreciating the Inspiration of Nature, Working with thoughful Adults and Sharing the Experience with Others to Visionalize and Form a Code of Living that would last a Lifetime. Our Intergregation and Participation Movement opended the Dor for other all Black Boy Scou Troops to attend "Philmont. Scoutmaster Donald Shelmire led a Boy Scout Troop from Camphor Memorial Methodist Church of Scotlandville, La., Many years later with his (2) Eagle Scouts. Journey of a Boy Scout Troop "Be Prepared" will Capture your imagination as they take you on a Journey from Scotlandville, La., on a Yellow School Bus accross country to Cimarron, New Mexico. A virtual Tour; then leaves you spellbound at their arrival to Base Camp to the departure home. You witness first hand the Mountain Climb of "Tooth of Time" from the foothills and valleys to the very Top at (10,000feet) elevation. Our Camp Site being invaded by Bears looking for food while we were asleep at night. Crossing a thundering water rapid river with a rope bridge, our Scoutmaster falling in the water rapids off a boulder rock leading to his rescue by his own scouts. Trappen in a Mountain hail storm with no where to take cover to the Majestic beauty of walking in the Clouds at (10,000feet) elevation after a (50)mile hike.
