Philip Edward Thomas (1878 -1917) was an Anglo-Welsh war poet and journalist Thomas enlisted in the army in 1915, and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras in 1917. Thomas began writing poetry when he was under the stress of deciding whether to enlist in the army during World War I. Edward Thomas's Collected Poems was one of Andrew Motion's ten picks for the poetry section of the "Guardian Essential Library" in October 2002.
