Description

Polycarp, a destroyer of our gods, is not a typical novel as it illustrates through the life of a pastor named Polycarp how God forms and fashions his message in our lives. It is a story built on the four cornerstones of discipleship: faith, obedience, spiritual desire, and godly virtue. God establishes our faith and guides us into and through the struggles of obedience. Obedience awakens joyous, spiritual desires in our heart that mature us into godly and virtuous people. Polycarp was a prominent second-century Church Father and pastor of the church of Smyrna. He was born into slavery, purchased as a young boy, and raised by a godly woman in Ephesus. He, along with several others, became leaders in the church after the death of the Apostles. According to tradition, Polycarp was a disciple of the Apostle John. Little is known of Polycarp's life and ministry except for a few reverent thoughts shared by his disciple, Irenaeus, and other church historians. His letter to the Philippian church has survived to this day and has been included in this novel, along with the accounts of his death. His life and ministry became a threat to self-glory seekers and those lusting for Caesar's favor. When the ambitious Quadratus, the Proconsul of Rome, tried to tame the God-centered allegiance of the venerable pastor with a threat of death, Polycarp responded; "For eighty-six years I have served the Lord and never has he treated me wrongfully. How can I dare dishonor him now?" Polycarp, a destroyer of our gods, is a gripping novel written in the form of a historical narrative. This dramatic story leads the reader in discovering how God takes simple and ordinary people to destroy the gods of men and magnify his glory in a dark and sinful world. While most novels carry you along by emotion and imagination, this one will inspire you to get out into the fray of your own battles and discover the lessons that promote spiritual growth.
