Carlos Brown is a recently divorced young father of two. One night his wife, Nita, walks out on them, forcing him to attempt to raise their kids, Lito and Nanny, and Dallas, a recently orphaned young boy, all on his own. Striving against the backdrop of the turmoil of Chicago's Cabrini-Green housing project during the turbulent period of the late 60's, Carlos first flounders, then starts to find his way, both back into a social life, and also as a lone parent to his small, suddenly incomplete family. Together, they attempt to overcome their abandonment by Nita amidst the political firestorm that seemed to be sweeping the world during the long summer of 1969. As if that wasn't enough, Carlos, suddenly adrift emotionally, finds that he is haunted by the vision of a beautiful, sad, and mysterious young woman who appears out of the blue like a stunning, dark-eyed angel, one who instantly claims his own broken heart.
