Learning to balance on a rope several feet in the air over water was a new experience. During that time period of training we also ladder climbed what seemed like a hundred feet up a tree to a small platform. A cable was attached from the tree down to another large oak on the other side of the river. We stood on the platform, held on to a pulley attached to the cable, lifted our feet, and down we went---the Ranger's version of a zip line---When the flagman at the bottom raised his flag, we'd let go into the river. It didn't take much imagination to know what would happen if we didn't let go. We were told later that at least one previous trainee had not let go.This is a journal about the Hughes family. In our earlier years, families are many times too busy planning way ahead to a goal we want to reach, but miss out enjoying the journey to get there. I like the philosophy of a cowboy in one of Louis L'Amour's novels. "The thing to remember when traveling is that the trail is the thing, not the end of the trail. Travel too fast and you miss all you are traveling for.""Preserving the Trail" is an attempt to record some of the events in mine and Linda's life. I hope our family enjoys as much reading about these events as I did writing about them.IG Hughes Jr received a BA from Dallas Baptist College (later University) and an MRE from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
