Description

This dissertation is not about the Beijing Olympics. Instead it opens up the short-range logic of the media event to consider the broader patterning of Olympic transformation in twenty-first century China. The study centers on the role of media technologies in shaping urbanism, development and political society. It pays close attention to Beijing as a pivot for social communication--a media and mediated capital--as well as to shifting capacities of emergence and control. Focusing on emergence and control reframes static models of complicity and resistance that continue to dominate knowledge produced about contemporary China. Such studies overwhelmingly understand official culture in China as bad and non-state culture good. In response, I adopt a conjunctural method which seeks to at once explore the cross-sections of the social formation (e.g. official, popular and marginal actors) and the intermedial or multimodal forms through which variegated social actors project Beijing and make claims on the social.
