How can aesthetic experiences in the counseling office be transformational? This thesis argues that by being conscious of the power of aesthetic experiences therapists can use those experiences to further the aim of therapy, which is to transform. Using the image of the office as a garden, this thesis explores how a depth aesthetics might function to support the aim of therapists in their clinical practice. In exploring how the therapeutic space is both part of the therapeutic process and an aesthetic object, this thesis reframes the office as a complex and clinically useful ecology. The theoretical foundations of this hermeneutic and heuristic research are rooted in the work of post-Jungian psychologist James Hillman, psychoanalyst Christopher Bollas, and philosopher John Dewey, among others, from the field of humanities. The research of neuroscientists Gabrielle Starr and Semir Zeki, and psychologists Ann Sloan Devlin and Jack L. Nasar informs this work.
