In the early 1980s, Richard (Dick) Sanford Matson shared personal narratives with his children of his life and work in India, beginning in 1937. A working class kid from Sioux City, Iowa, Dick had joined Standard-Vacuum Oil after receiving an MBA at Northwestern University. His career as an oil company executive began in Karachi, followed by posts in Calcutta, Bombay, Hong Kong, New York, Bombay and nally Delhi. During WWII, he married Jana Longnecker, a hometown girl from the other side of the tracks. Anecdotes about his life, from childhood through retirement, serve as an introduction to his personal narratives. His daugher Jana includes her perspective on how growing up in India affected her life and career as a professor focusingon South Asian women. His son Jim offers three stories about his family's experiences.
