Congress gives the Navy permission to promote a woman to the rank of Rear Admiral; however, it takes the Navy men nearly five years to promote a woman to that high rank. The Navy selects Alene Duerk, a registered nurse to be the first woman Rear Admiral. Her service to the Navy continues for many years and in many Navy bases around the world until her death at age ninety-eight.
