Description

If your kid needs a role model and you ain't it, you're both (expletive deleted) George Carlin Does the above Carlin quotation get your attention? If you have a child, it should. By the way, do you have a child? Are you the role model, mentor or life coach? Perhaps, you have no children. Are you at least someone's role model? Are you a young person? If so, do you have a role model, mentor or life coach? How do you currently feel about trends in moral values, changes in family structure, institutional and political corruption and the complexities and confusion of daily life? Are we better off or worse off compared to earlier generations? More specifically, regarding changes in family structure and relationships, how do you feel about such issues as single parent families or children born out of wedlock? How do you feel about the plight of inner city youth? Do you find such topics disturbing? Might we be at risk of losing our way? Speaking of moral values and virtuous character, who do young folks look up to today? Who are their heroes? Do they have any? More importantly, who do they want to be like when they grow up? Who are their mentors and role models? Do they have any? Are they good ones? Pass the aspirin. Wouldn't you agree that mentors and role models could play an awfully important role or be the last great equalizer in the current, somewhat troubling environment, especially in cases where parental counsel and guidance is bad or nonexistent? Is there a chance that you might be one of those potential great equalizers? Wouldn't you like to make a difference or do something about the current trials and tribulations of young folks? I have a dual purpose in sharing my personal perspective with you. If you are a young person in your formative years, perhaps you will feel inspired to seek out a mentor or role model as you embark on your early adult journey. Secondly, if you are of the more experienced ilk (code for "older and wiser"), and you feel that we as a culture may be losing our way, perhaps, you will decide to take on the highly essential role of mentor or role model and throw out a "life line" to some young person in need of good example Consequently, as we take a closer look at my early mentors and role models, please reflect on your life experiences. And, as you ponder this subject, ask yourself. Is it possible to reverse current trends in moral values, eliminate institutional and political corruption and avoid some of the confusion and complexities of daily life? Pretty tall order, wouldn't you agree? However, hope springs eternal. Whether young or old, our mission should we choose to accept: Get a role model; be a role model. This aspiration will self-destruct in five seconds. Good luck.
