It is ironic that the first American military hero was a black high school dropout from Waco, Texas, Doris Miller. This sharecropper's son was not named Dorie as many now say; his name was Doris & he & his family resisted all attempts of the Navy to change its hero's name to something more manly. Doris Miller was at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, when the Japanese attack pulled the United States into World War II. This messman's heroics resulted in his becoming the first black American to receive the Navy Cross. An American warship, the USS MILLER, was named in his honor. Schools, auditoriums, federal & local buildings & numerous other edifices were named in honor of Doris Miller. Most importantly, in many ways, Doris Miller was the catalyst for the many changes that altered the treatment & opportunities for blacks in the United States Navy during & after World War II. His story is now told & the effects of his actions on his family & his nation are also included. The tragedy of his not surviving the war & some questions in that regard are also revealed.
