The sun is overhead at a small town in Uttar Pradesh, and an 8-year old Ruchika is peeking through the jamb of the door out into the alley."Shh...stop crying!" Ruchika whispers to Soni."Don't cry, Soni. Everything will be all right." She is scared from the wailing noises coming from a death procession out in the alley.A young boy from the neighbourhood had died and this has shocked everybody. He was laid down on a bed of bamboo sticks and carried by his friends. The boy's family is in mourning, particularly, the mother is grievous. Her loud cry resonates around the quiet neighbourhood that is usually quite busy during afternoons. The mother had been screaming hard all morning in disbelief and anger. It seems like her throat would be torn if she is not calmed. The sheer intensity of her vocal despair is scaring Soni a lot.Everyone from Ruchika's family has been at the funeral preparations since that morning, leaving Ruchika in-charge of Soni. Her curiosity to find out what is happening at the procession is peaking inside. So, she sneaks a peek every few minutes. It is evening and her family members have not yet returned. She is all alone and feeling scared as well. The lack of a functional street light outside her home is making Ruchika panic with fear. She makes sure that all the doors are shut tight and goes back to sit with her niece. While helplessly trying to distract Soni, Ruchika thinks of a scary tale often told to the crying children. "Don't cry, Soni, please or the poltergeist will come," tells Ruchika but Soni continues to tear.In a desperate attempt to put an end to Soni's loud cry, Ruchika thinks of something funny, "hey, poltergeist! Are you there? Come & meet my Soni." Unfortunately, this makes Soni restless and Ruchika does not understand why!She hears an automobile approaching her home and runs to the window to see if her family has returned. Regrettably, she cannot see clearly because it is pitch dark outside her home, except for the growing shadow of a rickshaw. She feels frightened of the darkness and takes a step back to shut the window. "Maybe I should take Soni to my room and wait there until our family is back at home." She decides to go into her upstairs bedroom and believes that she will be safe over there. She collects Soni from the living room and makes her way to the staircase when suddenly, a strong gust of wind blows from behind and touches her back. She feels as if someone just grazed their fingers through her back. Even the hair on her neck stands up straight and she notices goosebumps all over the body. She turns around to see who it was and where is the wind blowing from? With the baby in her arms, she is terrified as she looks around the living room but finds no window or doorway open.As she takes her steps back to the stairs, the living room window bursts open and a dark shadow appears to grow bigger on the adjacent wall. Ruchika quickly recites a prayer and hugs Soni tightly to her chest. She does not want any harm to come to her niece. She then hears the strong winds from outside and a heavy voice resonating in the room. Ruchika is petrified! She screams many times before falling unconscious to the floor and the baby in her arms also slips out of her hands.
