Results of a 1985 survey of 497 academic staff concerning research degree study at the University of New South Wales (Australia) are summarized. Issues addressed by the survey were: the relevance of research study, desirable levels of enrollment in research study by field, the relationship between the Ph.D. and research master's programs, duration of enrollment in research programs, and specific problem areas in research programs and supervision. Despite some staff having reservations about the appropriateness of research degree training for vocational goals outside academia, and an apparent awareness of limited opportunities for research graduates, there was almost no support for reducing number of Ph.D. or research master's candidates. Respondents' views concerning the appropriateness of research degree training for the following vocations are reported: academic career, research career, graduate employment in the field studied, and other graduate employment. Additional topics include views about: entry criteria for research degree study; differences between Ph.D. and research master's theses; and the need for critical review of aspects of research degree study.
