Resilience, Risk and Safeguarding provides a focused introduction to three key concepts relating to childhood in contemporary UK society and is aimed at students in Higher Education studying childhood or on courses relating to work with children and young people. It explains and clarifies key issues relating to Resilience, Risk and Safeguarding but moves beyond accepting them at face value to provide a critical understanding of how each concept has come to be embedded within contemporary understandings of childhood and children's services. Just what it means to be critical is also explained clearly and concisely. The book provides a clear account of how the social and political context of society has led to Resilience, Risk and Safeguarding being so important with respect to childhood and provides students with an accessible introduction to academic debates. For example, we may all agree that children need to develop resilience but is resilience something that some of us have and others do not? How might social worries about risks contribute to safeguarding practices which then act to reduce the opportunities for developing resilience? When we look at it like this we might see how it is that young people appear to lack resilience and come to be referred to as snowflakes. To make sense of developments such as this we have to consider how social and political changes influence childhood. So, neoliberalism promotes individualism and this shapes the ways in which we are expected to be individually responsible in terms of resilience and risk. The book pushes students to scrape below the surface and to assess not only how practices and policies develop but also to think about what this might mean for children and young people in the long term.Rob Creasy has over 30 years' experience in teaching in both FE and HE and makes good use of this to present the ideas in a way that makes sense. The book not only introduces students to a critical view of Resilience, Risk and Safeguarding, but in addition the book acts as a study buddy by both explaining key concepts in an easy to read style and also in showing how students may use them. Each chapter concludes by identifying key issues as may be relevant for student assignments and the concluding chapter presents the book as reflecting a typical student essay. The aim is not just that students understand this material but also that they start to see what they might do with it in an assignment. Each chapter can be read on its own but the concluding chapter shows how each concept overlaps with the others to shape a particular experience of childhood. The book doesn't assume prior knowledge and it recognises that for the typical student 10 years ago is when they were still in primary school, there's no reason for them to remember what was happening at that time. If it is important or relevant it is explained simply and clearly to provide a short, but critical introduction to some key issues in childhood studies.
