Description

During the Civil War, Michigan raised 30 infantry regiments, 11 cavalry regiments, and four specialized regiments: the 1st Colored Infantry, 1st Engineers and Mechanics, 1st Light Artillery, and 1st Sharpshooters. Pittsfield Township men have been identified in 22 of the 30 infantry regiments and 7 of the 11 cavalry regiments, as well as every one of the four special regiments. They also served in U.S. (regular army) regiments and enlisted at several other states.According to the 1860 population census, the Pittsfield Township, Michigan population stood at almost exactly 1200. According to contemporaneous newspaper reports, Pittsfield Township was "credited" with providing 119 soldiers, which represented 20 percent of the male population. However, many more men who lived in and grew up in Pittsfield Township also enlisted and served during the war. This volume attempts to identify three categories of Pittsfield Township boys and men that served during the war. The first category includes men that were "credited" to Pittsfield Township. The second category includes men who grew up in Pittsfield Township, but were credited to other localities in Michigan. The third, and smallest, category includes Civil War soldiers that moved to Pittsfield Township after the war. The core of this book is the Roster of Valor, which provides information for more than 160 Pittsfield Township soldiers. The roster entries include service records, which, where possible, gives residence, date of enlistment, date of muster in, rank, promotion, wounds received, capture and imprisonment by the enemy, date of discharge, muster out date, and if known, by death the cause and location of death. When the records exist, supplemental insights are included from battlefield "returns" and other national, state, and local databases and records. For the soldiers that were killed or died of their wounds, brief battle histories are provided. Excerpts from letters to or from soldiers also have been included when they has been preserved and located.C.
