This short volume, written specifically to people of every ethnicity, provides an overview of the life of the great Blues singer, Ida M. Prather Cox, the Jewel of the Blues. Ida was born in 1888, the daughter of slave parents. Her history as a singer began in the church. At an early age she heard performers from the Minstrel circuit, who were dancers, comedians, singers, singing all types of musical forms of the early 1900's. Ida had an amazing intellect for one so young, and she soon realized that she could tell the stories of her people's struggles, pain and the terrible injustice of racism. They were seeking equality, but the were beaten down by slave-owners; they just needed to be treated as human beings should be treated: equally of value (importance) and worth (greatness of personhood). Hearing the Blues released their pain and sorrow. Ida sang to people everywhere about the power black people had when they helped one another to survive, because they could understand and share the feelings of others. She wanted white oppressors to feel this same kind of empathy equally toward all human beings. This carefully researched biography includes an extensive photo collection of historic documents and original artwork by Deborah Bates.
