Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Wormeley Latimer (1822-1904) was an acclaimed American historian and translator. She produced a dozen interesting and well- researched histories.Latimer's most important work was a series of histories of Europe in the 1800s. The first volume, France in the Nineteenth Century, was published in 1892, when Latimer was 70. Mrs. Latimer's history of Turkey and Russia was her second history, first published in 1893. She followed this with a history of England (1894), Italy (1896), and Spain (1897). These books reveal much study and considerable understanding of national and world development. They abound in anecdotes and are written in a vivacious style.
