The setting is in New Zealand around 1998-2000 Rangi's grandfather, Pops, is ill and needs money for healthcare. Rangi and his friend, Colin, have heard that a recently deceased man had hidden a fortune in gold near the tapu (sacred) Green Lake. They enlist the help of Tessa, her friend Kathy, and Graham, to search for the gold in the dense, isolated bush surrounding the lake. Instead of gold the children find a volcanic crater with hot pools, a complex cave system, and a beautifully preserved old whare (Maori house). The whare is the site of a Maori tribal massacre - the dead are entombed in one of the nearby caves. While at the whare, the children have strange dreams of an old Maori man talking to them in their sleep. The search for gold is put on hold when the children stumble across a secret laboratory hidden in the caves. They discover a group of scientists experimenting with creating super-humans and super-bugs. The kids blow up the entrance to the cave, confiscate the scientists' laptop computers, cameras and a huge haul of gems, and inform their parents who alert the government. They let the scientists go, but not before Graham's dog Ruff, savages the mastermind. Back at the whare, Rangi discovers that the old man of their dreams is in fact an ancient ancestor of his, and has been living in secret at the whare for many years. He, like Tessa and Graham, share the strange ability to astral travel. Tarawera the old man, asks the children to send their fathers for healing. The children hide the gems and then go home and reveal everything to David, a special agent who has been tracking the scientists. But it isn't over yet. No one knows where the scientists are, but they do know they'll be back to reclaim the millions of dollars' worth of gems...
