During the 1980's the Antelope Valley experienced an urban expansion from the Los Angeles Basin. For most of the Valley's history life was agricultural and bucolic. The vast Mojave roamed with cattle, forage fields, and pristine orchards laying at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains. From these mountains the Valley was nourished by the snow melt into a flush aquifer. With urban expansion this water source was sucked by sub-divisions and an influx of businesses including the growth of the aerospace industry added to the changing face of the Valley. The remaining farms and orchards fought for water rights. For field irrigation ranchers had to drill deeper and deeper for their water until the cost drove them away from the life they've experienced for many generations. The few who remained were large entities. This story is about the largest, The Bar R. The "R" began as a cattle ranch in the early 1900's and continued until cattle ranching phased into forage farming (alfalfa) and other field products. At the far eastern section of the Bar R sits the mystical Coyote Buttes. At its base sits an old line rider's shack still occupied by an aging Bar R cowhand waiting for the Riders of the Midnight Sky to arise out of the shaman haunted Buttes to carry him away on flaming horses to his final destination in the great prairies of the midnight sky. Stable is tended to by a Bar R daughter and an old friend, Deputy Duke Dykstra from the Owens Valley. Mystery and crime await.
