For years, I puzzled over how does faith in Christ translate into how the church does and should conduct its business, that is, how the visible church implements its mission. When I first saw The Power Cycle, a model of the visible church developed by Karl Koch, my eyes were opened to the possibilities. Basically, this model illustrates the importance of the cyclical nature of Christian life, both for individuals and the corporate body of believers. Its cyclical nature teaches that every activity has equal, but unique, value. Our lives are bound to the cycle and the cycle continues until the Lord takes us home. Likewise, it teaches us that there is never such a permanently good and unchanging form of the visible, institutional church. It teaches us that the task of church life is ongoing. The work of being the church will be unending - unending until the Lord returns to recreate all things. Further, this model captures and illuminates the God created "firm foundation" for our faith and life together as a body of believers: a foundation laid in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus that will endure for all time. An incarnational ministry under the authority of God, with the promise of Jesus's presence, and sustained with the gifts of the Spirit, will produce fruits and will survive the attacks of the world, Satan, and even our own flesh. There can be no better foundation than this. Come join Karl as he makes the connection between the Power Cycle and life in the Christian church. You will see in this simple model how the spiritual and institutional natures of the church interact within the body of Christ, the church. In the end, a vision of the Triune God will appear before you. Al Renard Associate Author
