Description

This book is primarily a short collection of a number of clever, incisive aphorism-like sentences taken from Sir Henry Taylor's The Statesman, first published in 1836. In total, it is comprised of 150 individual entries, or quotations, (which, in his understanding of what they were, Taylor himself liked to term "pragmatic precepts") chosen by its editor, together with a brief introductory essay. Sir Henry Taylor (October 18, 1800 - March 27, 1886) was an English civil servant, dramatist, poet and well connected man of letters. The work of literature he is perhaps now best known for is The Statesman, which is a critical examination of statecraft and realpolitiks in late Georgian England. It comes as some surprise, then, that Taylor himself disliked the work immensely, and the literary repercussions of its publication (and steady drip of sales thereafter) followed him for most of his career. However, this in no way detracts from the work's political and social relevance, and the sagacious, worldly truth of the message behind it.
