ABOUT OUR EDITION: What is different about our edition? We think its greater readability and accessibility. Ours is not a facsimile print. We reset the content. We translate foreign language texts, provide explanations and descriptions for names, places, and terms that may be unfamiliar in everyday discourse. We also document quotes, references, and allusions, providing citations to sources that were available at as near the times the work appeared. We hope that by doing so, we have made it more comprehensible and accessible to the average reader.ABOUT THIS BOOK: Cardinal Manning delivered the thirty-eight sermons over a span of two decades. Although they were given at very wide intervals, the identity of thought and spirit throughout the collection is very striking. Starting with the principle that the one, holy, catholic, apostolic Church founded by Our Lord first took her breath when the Holy Ghost gave her life at Pentecost, we learn to recognize the spiritual authority of the Bishop of Rome and the importance for every man, woman, and child, to be in communion with the Church; and for institutions and governments, subject to her moral teachings. Cardinal Manning draws striking contrasts between the Church and all others, most especially as reflected in her perennial teaching and sacred Tradition.ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Henry Edward Manning, +1892, was a member of the Oxford Movement, who converted to the one, true Faith in 1851. He was ordained a priest by Nicholas Cardinal Wiseman, the first Archbishop of Westminster. He then studied theology at Rome. Upon his return, he founded the Oblates of St. Charles, a diocesan religious society. His rapid rise in the Church culminated in his appointment as successor to Cardinal Wiseman and his elevation to the rank of Cardinal. As Archbishop, Manning was a vigorous builder of Catholic schools and religious institutions. He was a strong advocate of Papal Infallibility at the Vatican Council. He labored to alleviate the plight of workers, and his views had a profound influence in the encyclical Rerum Novarum of Pope Leo XIII. At his death, he left a voluminous collection of works and letters, some of which are still being edited even today.
