Samantha Rose Johnson is a tough, cynical, but law-school educated, licensed private detective working in Elgin, Illinois. From growing up biracial in the tough South Sangamon neighborhood of Chicago in the seventies, to a tour with the United States Army Military Police Corps where she completed Air Assault training, Sam knows what life can throw at you. When she encounters thugs of any stripe who ask her who she thinks she is, she's glad to stare them in the eyes and reply with a sardonic grin, "straight up bitch, comma optional". In Service With A Smile, Sam must find a way to serve court papers on a street-smart attorney who lives in the affluent suburb of St. Charles, Illinois, but whose law practice revolves around his ownership of slum-like apartment complexes in Elgin and Chicago. In Out From Fear, Sam is retained by Bruce, her primary criminal defense attorney client, to review discovery documents and speak to Bruce's client. Sam sees a pattern between the defendant and one of the Sheriff's deputies, as well as other problems with the State's case. In talking to Bruce's client, Sam is told of a witness who did not appear in any police reports from the raid or after-action reports. Sam finds the witness but then must rely on Bruce to assist her in convincing the witness to come forward.
