This thesis contextualizes my 2012 electroacoustic chamber opera The Chairs within anemerging contemporary tradition of new music theater. One of first and most comprehensive English-language attempts to survey the trends of 20th-century opera composition is by Eric Salzman and Thomas Desi, who propose that a new music theater began with Arnold Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire (1912). In part one of this thesis, I isolate some of the characteristics of new music theater and discuss how they appear in The Chairs. In part two, I present an analysis of the musical content of the piece, and demonstrate how its composition parallels its dramatic structure. This part of the thesis shows how the opera's integration of compositional, improvisational, and technological processes provides a setting for the Absurdist drama on which it is based.
