Madelyn (Maddie) and Billie Coleman coordinate a favorite holiday get-together for friends who are known as corazones decisivos (Decisive Hearts), unaware this 2019 celebration will alter selected lives again. The sisters' home observance for Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) takes place at their old basement apartment in Capitola, California to honor deceased loved ones. A mutual friend, Imani Brewer, recently died from a broken heart and the group wants to flaunt expected displays of affection and respect for her. Dia de los Muertos believers wait for heaven's gates to open at midnight on October 31 since spirits of dead angelitos reunite with families for twenty-four hours. Adult spirits follow on November 2 to enjoy festivities. Hearts love the fun, reverence, costumes and bounty of special foods though no one was born in Mexico. Interconnections and two core ideas bind the women, which include the belief that wétiko is a universal soul disease, and people harbor secrets loitering in shadows. In addition to Maddie and Billie, the usual clique of Jasmine (Jazzy) O'Brien, Naomi Page, Claire Muñoz, and Courtney (Cappy) Pickett, are present. Erin Thorne arrives as well with guest Connie Meyer, a lawyer who three Hearts know from the distant past. Deep-rooted wounds erupt with ferocity for Cappy. Nevertheless, before a dramatic stage is set, buoyancy flourishes until Claire memorializes a storytelling journey whereby most Hearts begin to reveal secrets."At a point in our lives, nearly half of us felt thrown out with the old tub's dirty bath water. No one saw us. You know what I mean so don't look shocked. Others fell under a spell of some goddess grace and two died an early death." While Claire connects fragments of her life, amigas support her lead. Hearts in attendance at the event have struggled with difficulties that transformed individual lives, and did so amidst cultural changes during the turbulent sixties and seventies. After Claire's rape and departure from the U.S., she begins to heal through Cuban drums until meeting the Coleman sisters' father, thirty-two years subsequent to her brutal attack. By showing up on Claire's doorstep, Alex Coleman adds another dimension to her denial. Over time, Maddie's anger subsides. Tragic losses and bullies force her into a relationship with herself and associates, revealing her own self-centeredness and naiveté. Drug and alcohol addictions create unbreakable bonds for Billie, the Vietnam nurse, and Naomi, a comic, who shuns her family's generational wealth. The fanciful Jazzy appears to have a charmed life but, at one point, she narrowly escapes sex traffickers due to an undercover CIA officer. Explosive mental disorders like "Malicious Mother Syndrome" and "Parental Alienation" lay a foundation for Cappy and Erin who have more than a twenty-year age difference. Both were victims of the two diseases that alienate one parent from a biological child or children. This year's celebration brings alive the tragic consequences of the two syndromes. Information gleaned from a messy confrontation will begin to change the lives of many outside the group. Irrespective of tragedies, violence and betrayal, Hearts transcend mere survival to a throne of relative tranquility. All women listen to internal dialogues then draw power from their souls that reflect personal environments. Resultant efforts come to life at an art exhibit and culinary affair, illuminating a bombshell of twists and turns.
