At 17 Beth Whitworth was poised for a promising and successful future as a coloratura soprano, a future supported by her voice teachers who encouraged her to pursue her dream. Endowed with stunning beauty and youthful ambition, Beth set her sights on studying voice at the Julliard School of Music in New York City as soon as she finished college. On summer break that year, Beth was happy to be back home on the family farm. It would, however, turn out to be a summer that would change her life forever. A chance encounter with a handsome young man at the local ice cream shop would put into motion the gradual disintegration of her hopes and plans. It began when he appeared unannounced at her home, explaining that he had gotten her address from the owner of the ice cream shop and that he would like to take her to lunch. Beth was not impressed, but her mother, who had seen him through a window, was, and invited him in for some iced tea. This was all he needed and thus, Daniel Ames became a steady guest in her home. Over the summer months Daniel wooed not only Beth, but her entire family. A theology student, on the brink of becoming a pastor, Daniel won over the heart and mind of Beth's mother, a deeply religious woman who wanted the best for her daughter. Although Beth resisted, vehemently at first, the final blow came when her mother announced that she could no longer afford her college tuition and that Beth would have to stay home. With her mother's words, the devastating shock of defeat obliterated any hope she had of having the future she had so longed for and marrying Daniel Ames seemed her only choice. After pastoring several churches in Georgia, the couple answered a call to serve as missionaries to a small congregation in Maringa, a small town in Brazil that was rapidly becoming like America's Wild West after the Civil War. This book is about Beth and how she overcomes the unexpected hardships of living in a growing Brazilian town that had been carved out of the jungle; of the challenges in her marriage; and of the deterioration and then the rediscovery of her inner core. With time, she would find her way. But it would not be the way that, at one time, had been the future she had chosen for herself.
