On a quiet city street in the early morning, a young woman's body violently collides with the pavement after falling from the roof of one of the high rises above, seemingly dead on impact. Only she didn't fall, she jumped. And she's not young. Or dead. She's Marcela LaCroix, immortal. What brought Marcela to the rooftop that morning and, ultimately the reason she threw herself off, was boredom with her terminal life. Believing that her soul had been returned to her, thus relinquishing Marcela from a "devilish" pact and making her mortal again, imagine Marcela's surprise when things don't go as planned and she's still alive and well after the plummet. Marcela has found herself the victim of an impish prank at the hands of her soul's proprietor. Fuming, and still immortal, Marcela decides to put her gift to good use as a crash test dummy. Marcela's regrets and loneliness remain, however. After more than a century passes, Marcela is informed that she will be permitted to reclaim her soul, no strings attached. Her joy is short-lived, as she discovers the agency responsible for her soul's containment has inexplicably misplaced it. Marcela is even more devastated to learn her "lost soul" has wound up in the hands of Rita Sinclair, an unapologetically caustic malcontent who refuses to give back to Marcela what is rightfully hers. The two strong-willed combatants engage in a battle of verbal warfare and one-upsmanship. Rita refuses to budge. Marcela is dumbstruck as to Rita's reasons, or lack thereof, why. Then, tragedy strikes and Marcela is reunited with the thing she's been chasing for centuries, the very thing she believes will make her whole. Or so she thinks
