Although the Southern Railway existed for only a relatively short period, from the Grouping in 1923 through to Nationalisation, during that 25-year period it created a strong identity both among the travelling public and among its staff. While much of the infrastructure and equipment used by the SR was inherited from the three constituent pre-Grouping companies and survived to Nationalisation, the SR was innovative in many ways, from its widespread adoption of third-rail electrification and its use of concrete through to its locomotive design (particularly under Bulleid).
