Set in a government office in Canberra in 2019, a small team which works to the Minister for Homeland Affairs has been asked to prepare a report on the impending breakup of the 83 regions of the Russian Federation. It's a geopolitical crisis likely to cause major power shifts between Europe and Asia. As the team rallies to get its report in, we discover an office itself fracturing as ambitious Vic, second-in-charge, unearths secrets about Nev, her manager. Vic seeks advantage from these secrets while Nev is pushed to protect himself. Each person in the office is experiencing their own life changes, drawing lines between their presents and pasts. As we delve into various angles of the looming global crisis, we find resonances between our macro and micro worlds. 'Splitting Apart' is a work told in six parts, each narrated in first person by a different member of the team: Taz, the most junior member; Wes, the ex-gamer; Sammy, the F2M transgender; Quinn, the ex-musician; Vic, the ambitious manager wanting her overseas posting; Nev, the British migrant who changed his name when he migrated. The strategy is inspired by Faulkner's As I Lay Dying and Browning's The Ring and the Book. As both homage and reference, the work is sprinkled with a series of Russian literary references, eg the proliferation of bogus websites recalls Gogol's Dead Souls.Nev fails to silence Vic until he falls back on his British commando experience to devise a plan stop her in a way that would never implicate himself. To achieve this he sets up a team-building exercise in a local gym. One subplot is that Sammy bets with Vic that he can have seduce Nev in quick time.'Splitting Apart' is a literary novel. Besides exploring objectivity/subjectivity issues, it questions how world crises interface social realities. The work also reflects on writing itself, and explores the nature of the reader through speculations on the reader of the report, in this case a Minister they barely know.
