In 1947 Los Angeles, six year old Nancy wants to be a good girl, but her "kidness" keeps tripping her up. So, she decides to spy on those around her to learn the secret of following the rules. Nancy's friends on Clinton Street, Bonnie, the rich girl, Lura and David, the poor kids, involve her in experiences including a dead dog, a broken comb, stealing from Mom, television, a guilty conscience, and more, expanding her world. At Our Lady of the Holy Martyrs Elementary School, the nuns introduce Nancy to Popes, Protestants, Pagan Babies, and the pain of a ruler on her palm. Nancy's Polish American family (with the added spice of a Mexican uncle) is the major focus of her spy mission and greatly influence her: angry Dad who can't find a job; Aunt Rosy, who quits her job in order to create quirky stuffed animals, and Mom, Nancy's moral lodestar, who tries to steer her family in uncertain economic times, and to temper Nancy's less-than-loving treatment of her little brother, Phil the Rodent. At the climax of her spy mission, Nancy must choose between satisfying her desire for revenge against the rich girl, Bonnie and doing what Mom and the nuns would want her to do. Replete with both humor and sadness, Spy on Clinton Street explores a unique neighborhood of Los Angeles of the 1940s and its memorable characters.
