Description

Clinical observations and review of the literature reveal the existence of Differential Item Functioning (DIF) in tests produced by professionals (those working in both psychological and educational settings). the assumption is that the majority of DIF is due to some professionals not being able to detect DIF. the Null Hypothesis tested was that professionals in the field would Not take any action to correct DIF if they could detect DIF. This study developed and used an expert system for use by professionals to simplify the use of the Rasch Model of item analysis. the intuitive expert system, IBM compatible program (RMODEL), lowers the level of computer and Rasch Model expertise needed to do item analysis. Samples of five teachers were used because they often create their own tests and because it was a readily available group. Teachers are an eclectic group with varying degrees of computer skills. Before participation, all participants signed a Consent to Participate in Research Form. All participants received a questionnaire and a copy of RMODEL. All participants were asked to do an analysis on at least two tests. the questionnaires were collected during direct contact at the end of the quarter. the results were tabulated and a computer generated the profiles. the resulting data supported the rejection of the Null Hypothesis, revealing significant difference between the identified variable of professionals Not taking any action to correct DIF and taking action to correct DIF. the implications of a readily available, easy to use, easily understood tool in the hands of professionals are discussed.
