Foreword These are the words from the diaries of Thomas Nelson Gordy, Sr. They were recorded during World War II aboard a heavy cruiser named the USS San Francisco. The first diary was titled: GORDY, T. N. 1943. The second diary was titled: BOOK II T. N. GORDY 1944 - 1945. Thomas Gordy was seventeen years old when he joined the U.S. Navy. He was a signalman and like his shipmates was told not to keep a diary. The Navy feared valuable information found in a diary might fall into enemy hands. Tom thought if his ship ever sunk his diaries would end up at the bottom of the ocean. They survived the war and so did he. I added some punctuation but these are all Daddy's words. I have tried to type his diaries for almost ten years. Every time I began I would get overwhelmed and have to stop. Daddy was so young and so brave. I took courage from his words and hope you enjoy reading them as much as I have. It is also my hope that we always cherish and appreciate the freedom that is ours because of veterans like my Daddy.
