Sweden in the Eyes of the Immigrants comprises of a collection of interviews with people who have moved to Sweden from different countries around the world. Through their stories, each of them recounts their background and upbringing, their reason for moving to Sweden, the first surprises they experienced in the new country, and finally the differences - positive and negative - that they by now have discerned between their country of origin and Sweden. To give a more complete picture of the immigrants' views of Sweden, the book not only presents interviews with people from 25 different countries, but also the conditions in Sweden during different eras, from the acute recruitment of foreign labor in the 1950's and 1960's to the various waves of refugees from the 1970's up until today. The interviewees are chosen from both genders and come from different socio-economical backgrounds. To ensure that the volunteers have had time to familiarize themselves with the Swedish culture, the interviews have been conducted in Swedish. Since the narrators all stem from different countries, one might expect them to have made unique observations comparing Sweden with their native countries. To a certain extent this is true, but at the same time, some views are largely the same regardless of the origin of the narrators. Obviously, this highlights unique features in the Swedish culture. Anyone who reads this book will thus win insight into what is "typically Swedish".
