Teachings on Dharma covers not only what Dharma is but also how to live by its principles and why it is so effective in universally uplifting and empowering to all people. Teachings on Dharma covers numerous principles from Yuga-dharma, Varna and Ashrama Dharma, Naimittika Dharma, and Jaiva Dharma just to name a few. More importantly, however, it gives specific information on how to live and incorporate Dharma in our life. In the Atharva Veda (and more frequently in the Itihasas of Ramayana and Mahabharat) we find mention of the Arishad-vargas (six enemies) of lust, anger, greed, delusion, arrogance, and envy. These afflictions cause increasing harm not only to us but also our relationships, our marriages, our society, and our planet. They compromise our ability to create and sustain uplifting and successful lives of deep love, meaning, fulfillment and satisfaction. The Jiva (the individual spiritual being encased in a material body) is compromised and enslaved by these Arishad-vargas. The Arishad-vargas are the root cause of all suffering whether on the personal, interpersonal, or social levels. Indeed the very aim of human life itself is to ultimately be free of the Arishad-vargas and create an existence that empowers the expression and realization of our essential selves and highest potential. The principles of Dharma are the tools used to break the shackles of the Arishad-vargas. The principles of Dharma restore our freedom from the Arisha-dvargas and prevent and even reverse the damage they cause. The principles of dharma, as taught in the Puranas, are what distinguish human beings from animals and children from adults. The principles of Dharma are the foundation of a civilized human society and the criteria for qualification as a civilized human being. The principles of Dharma are non-religious and yet can be easily identified in the teachings of all the world's religions and processes of spirituality. Indeed, so universal are the principles of Dharma that they are espoused by every religion on the planet while simultaneously being lauded and practiced by atheists and agnostics alike. Indeed, the echoes of the principles of Dharma are everywhere for the principles of Dharma are essentially the principles of successful and harmonious existence. The principles of Dharma enable us to unlock and operate at our highest potential and capacities. The principles of Dharma are the principles of life. The Sanskrit word Dharma can be most accurately understood by the context in which it arises. Dharma can, again depending on context, refer to duty, way, path, righteousness, state of being, inclination, life principle, and so on. In studying Dharma it behooves us to always consider the text in which we find its use and the context in which it is referenced. Furthermore, as we continue to encounter the term Dharma in our study and research the more we become to attuned to its subtle import and nuanced meanings. In studying and understanding the principles of Dharma one receives the title of Dharma-shastri. Yet, to have the courage and strength to choose to walk that path is to be known as Dharmatma. Because Dharma is the key to unlocking the vault of human potential the Dharmatma has the ability to overcome all obstacles and challenges of life. The Dharmatma not only overcomes all obstacles in their own life, creating a meaningful existence for themselves, but they also have the knowledge and wisdom to transform the lives of all who come within their sphere of influence. In ways large and small Dharmatmas positively impact and inevitably uplift all around them. Dharmatmas live highly satisfying and deeply meaningful lives; and understandably so for Dharmatmas are the creators and transformational change agents on this planet.
