The role of nurses within multiagency rehabilitation teams was examined in a 2-year research project that included 3 case studies of a total of 49 clients of rehabilitation programs in the United Kingdom. Data were gathered through the following activities: observation of and interviews with clients, nurses, and other members of the multiprofessional team; a postal survey of nurses; and a record review. The nurses participated in the following aspects of patient care: assessment; coordination and communication; provision of technical and physical care; integration of therapy and therapy continuation; provision of emotional support; and involvement of the family in the client's rehabilitation. Only 36% of the nurses believed their preregistration education provided adequate skills and knowledge for their role in rehabilitation. Specific gaps in the nurses' skills and knowledge were identified. The study documented the scope and complexity of the knowledge base required by nurses on multiprofessional rehabilitation teams. The following were among the recommendations for improving nursing education: (1) base education preparing nurses for work in rehabilitation on a social model of rehabilitation; (2) institute a required nationally recognized and accredited postregistration qualification in rehabilitation; and (3) integrate learning in the workplace with more formal educational provision.
