Since 1915 the "6 House" has been an integral part of San Diego's Little Italy community. As the San Diego Fire Department's sixth fire station, it was built to protect the citizens of the growing waterfront community as well as service SDFD's fire apparatus and equipment.The 6 House was unique in that all of the firefighters assigned there were required to be skilled in a trade such as machinist, mechanic, carpenter, welder or painter. They wore distinctive work uniforms that set them apart from other firefighters. In 1919 the uniquely-built firehouse quickly gained prominence as its craftsman firefighters laid the keel and built what would become the world's first non-steam fireboat, the Bill Kettner. This design would become the template for all modern fireboats.In the 1960's Master Mechanic/Battalion Chief Robert Ely would further cement the 6 House's place in American history by inventing the National Standard Thread, which created one standard hose size. Up until then there were hundreds of sizes, which prevented fire departments from using each other's hydrants. This effectively allowed all FD's across the country to work as one, saving an untold amount of lives and property.
