Description

Engaged Scholarship (ES) is a research methodology that focuses on the input of multiple stakeholders and contributors, including practitioners and academics. The aim of ES is to draw on multiple viewpoints to produce research that investigates relevant contemporary management issues and to provide outputs that resonate with, and are accessible to, the intended audience(s), whilst still being academically rigorous. However, finding a structured way to incorporate these disparate voices into research is often difficult, and as a result, outputs can end up being too practitioner-focused (a consultancy project) or too academic (a pure research project). ES provides a structured method to overcome the difficulty of balancing the different practitioner and academic requirements. In the research presented in the following case, I studied three different organizations to understand how they created perceived customer value using data. I used an abductive approach, which allowed me to adapt to emerging data and to follow new ideas or limitations as they arose. I based the research question on a real business issue raised by practitioners, cross-checked the findings with key informants at the case study companies and industry consultants with wide experience of the issues, and then used groups of senior managers to test the developing framework to make sure it was understandable and useful. At each stage, I also checked our progress with academics in the field to ensure I was incorporating the latest and most appropriate research and meeting the requirements of the academy.
